Mountainboarding?
A common question is: what is mountainboarding?
Mountainboarding is now the fastest growing sport in the world and outsells snowboards in the UK at a rate of 2 to 1. Being featured on such media outlets as Men’s Fitness, ESPN, Fox Sports Net, GQ, Good Morning America and The Travel Channel has helped fuel this upswell in popularity. Taking it’s roots from surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding and mountain biking, it combines all of them. It’s a large board with pneumatic wheels that is used to carve down ski slopes, bomb forest roads, hit kickers and rails and ride over rocks, grass, pavement and pretty much anything that it confronts.
Lots of people initially started riding as an off-season alternative to snowboarding, which it very closely resembles, and for which it is excellent training (I think some US Snowboarding team Olympiads used it, and a handful of the pros ride on occasion). It definitely has built up confidence in turns and jumps in this rider. Now there are people who solely mountainboard, or prefer it to snowboarding. It is cheaper, more accessible, and can be done anywhere.
And yes, IT IS SAFE! Just like with any sport, precautions must be taken: helmets are a must, and other padding is highly recommended. And like other sports, there is a learning curve. So don’t try to “run before you can walk” as they say. The boards are more stable than snowboards, so almost anyone can learn to ride. We’ve had a couple “learn to ride” sessions, with peeps ranging in age from 8-40!
Come out and try it!
